Getting Started
Campus computing account and password information
Your campus computing account is your key to accessing nearly all UC Davis computing services. It is vitally important that you have a computing account as you will need it to use email and register for your classes. If you haven't already set up a computing account, or can't seem to remember your LoginID or password, call the IT Express Computing Services Help Desk at 530-754-HELP (4357). You may also sign up for an account online at computingaccounts.ucdavis.edu.
Computer ownership
Every undergraduate student is expected to own a computer that meets certain minimum performance standards, and you are also advised to bring a printer. Rather than require a specific computer system (i.e., PC or Mac), the campus provides a list of minimum functional computer requirements. For the recommended computer configurations, visit computerownership.ucdavis.edu. Desktop systems and laptops that meet or exceed the campus recommended specifications can be purchased at competitive prices at the TechHUB. If you are eligible for need-based financial aid, you may apply for additional funding to pay for these systems through the Financial Aid Office.
Accessing the Internet
If you plan to live on campus, you can connect directly to the Internet from your room using ResNet, the high-speed residence hall network. Wireless access to the campus network is also available in many areas on campus including Shields Library and the Memorial Union. Check the UC Davis campus tech map for wireless coverage areas, wireless access buildings, and computer room locations.
Security
Guarding against computer viruses, hacker intrusions, and identity theft has become an important part of campus computing life. The campus maintains a comprehensive Web site that provides information on the latest campus security efforts and helpful instructions on how to prevent a wide range of security issues, including phishing scams, compromised passwords, and identity theft.
The campus has also made the latest edition of Sophos Anti-Virus available to UC Davis students for free download via the MyUCDavis Web portal.
Campus computer rooms
Open-access computer rooms are available on campus for drop-in use and provide access to the Internet and a range of software programs used in UC Davis courses. Many computer classrooms are also available on a drop-in basis when not being used for instruction and a media computer lab is available with special equipment and software for media editing. Computer Centers available in each of the residence hall areas are another computing option for students who live on campus. Some campus departments also have computer rooms; check with the department's main offices for availability and locations. A computer room schedule and a downloadable map of computer room locations are both available online.
Exploring MyUCDavis, SmartSite, DavisMail, and SISWeb
MyUCDavis is the personalized campus Web portal, providing students with secure access to email, academic information (including grades and class Web sites), free and/or discounted software, and MySpace, a file-storage tool that provides up to 100 MB of storage space for class-related files. SmartSite is the campus collaboration and course management system. With it, you can collaborate with study groups, host online discussions, and more. DavisMail is your Google-powered campus email account. Through it you have access to a host of Google Apps, including Calendar, Chat, Talk, Docs, and Sites. SISWeb allows you to enroll in classes, and view, adjust and print your class schedule. You can also use SISWeb to view your student account, change your address, view your financial aid status and print your unofficial academic record.
